I first saw this jeep sitting outside a garage in Provincetown Ma. in 1993. The salt air and weather was taking its toll on her but the asking price was $3500 at the time and with some rust in the hat channels and corners by both front floors I let it pass. We go every year to Cape Cod so each passing year the jeep sat and looked all the more weathered. I asked about the jeep each year and the price went down but not enough. Finally, in 1996, the owner let it go for $1000 and I grabbed it. As a added surprise, he then told me he had the stretcher racks, full top,and reel light for the vehicle.
I had it shipped to CT by flat truck and began a full restoration in Jan. of 1997. I have already restored a M-38 and a CJ3B, and also own a basicallly untouched 49 CJ3A. Thinking that I know about jeeps a bit, I felt confident in this new restoration, and since its only a stretched out M38A1, how hard could it be. WRONG. I soon began learning about the many differences between the M-170 and the M-38A1, and rarity of some of the parts. Luckly, I had most of them and after cleaning and repairing such items as gas tank, emergency cable, windshield, tailgate, spring shackels, reel light, wiring, seats and frames, dash, and special brackets and top bows, it went fairly smoothly.
The fenders and body tub was professionally repaired and well worth the $$ as it is now very solid and back to original shape, down to the correct spot welds as found in the take-down. The engine needed a good cleaning with wire brushes and scrapers, but after a carb rebuild, runs well. All brake cylinders and shoes are new, and clutch parts are new. All electrical components were checked out and cleaned up and remains 24 volt. Every part of the jeep was taken off, sandblasted or cleaned up, painted and then stored away. When the frame and drive train were done, and the tub in place, then the stored parts were methodically reassembled onto the Jeep. By the summer of 1998, it made its first appearance at our annual Military vehicle show.
This M-170 is very complete, and has both the upper and lower stretcher racks, 3 stretchers, rear cushions(2 repros), correct seats with head cushions, working reel light, correct windshield, tailgate, all brackets and supports, a new NOS top with sides, 2 original folding door frames with canvas, original top bows, wood, and rods, dash plaques, wheel house plaque, etc. I felt it is was a very rare model Jeep (aprox. 5000 produced is the highest figure I have found), and one not usually found in as complete shape as this one, so it was worth a restoration. It really doesn't have the look of the flat fenders (my first love), but different enough to raise attention. I like it.
